The myth I enjoy seeing squashed is one that includes being a professional in your spare time as a pathway to competing successfully in {insert creative profession here}. I’m willing to bet that most highly successful creative professionals are obsessed, or possessed – not sure which. Competition is crazy tough so personal commitment is crucial.

I visited the National Portrait Gallery and rediscovered Keith Carter – a photographer I’ve long admired. I saw his portrait of American Playwright and screenwriter Horton Foote in which the Carter limited focus using forward lens tilts. I had forgotten him. I saw it and mumbled, “there it is”.

This is where it begins; the 1000 words theoretically embedded in every photo. Art and photography depends on language translation. The narration begins in our heads as we create. Just as music rises above its mathematical roots, imagery is descriptive.

While interviewing Will McFarlane for this video, I was reminded how critically important it is to avoid getting caught up in the nuance of our creative fields. "Music can be math without feel or tone" is one of my take away quotes in part II. Extending that, any field can be dry when devoid of feel or tone".
