Make the message emotional – get a strong response. When considering a marketing campaign visit your emotional parts. There is plenty of time for analysis: business structure, profit models, distribution, competitive positioning, and all that. Strategy stuff is a good time for your critical thinking. Message communication is time to use your emotion.Your business strategy is set, you’ve got your category insights, your target market is defined, now what? This is were those clever creative types come in handy. Converting your brand message into something that cuts the media clutter is hard, (sounds like a Presidential debate doesn’t it?) very hard.

Tap into the emotional desire of your target. I’ve been watching a couple of local hospitals fighting it out in the papers and on TV the last few months trying to win the regional Oncology category. The degree to which their ads stir the emotions is equal to how successful they are.

Ideally, the winner will secure the image as the place to go when your life is endangered by cancer. Do you do that by talking about shiny new facilities that few people understand? How about offering free parking? No – you do it by eliciting an emotional response from your customer akin to a child running to Mom after she bumps her head. The value for the child was in knowing were to get emotionally satisfied – treatment was a given. We haven’t grown up that much. I still want to be free from worry; I still want a Hospital to take my emotional burden seriously.

Perhaps you’re selling fashion. Do you talk about how it’s made or how high the thread count is? No – elicit an emotional response by creating style envy. What does the brand do when your customer wears it? How does it make her feel? How will it change their lives?

As an artist, I’m always looking for an emotional response from my photography viewers. If I get it, I’m successful. Commercial artist have a trickier task since the response has to be on strategy but a sure path to failure is to leave the emotions flat.
