The myth I enjoy seeing squashed is one that includes being a professional in your spare time as a pathway to competing successfully in {insert creative profession here}. I’m willing to bet that most highly successful creative professionals are obsessed, or possessed – not sure which. Competition is crazy tough so personal commitment is crucial.

I visited the National Portrait Gallery and rediscovered Keith Carter – a photographer I’ve long admired. I saw his portrait of American Playwright and screenwriter Horton Foote in which the Carter limited focus using forward lens tilts. I had forgotten him. I saw it and mumbled, “there it is”.
