Video Panel Discussion on Spec work recorded at South by Southwest – 2009. There is no more controversial subject than speculative design work and crowd sourcing. In general the business side loves it and the design side hates it.

Just as iStock photo invaded the stock photography market, other companies are harvesting amateurs in design, video production, or practically every creative service that can be commoditized.

Like it or not, it’s not going away.

    Its totally true that this is not going away, its also true that it brings the whole creative community down a level.

    The reality of having too many options to choose from is that after looking at 40+ examples of crap, a good design can easily be over looked as it blends in the static of the multitude of options and the viewer becomes over sensitized and tired if viewing impartially.

    Add to that the total disconnect from the client and any sort of creative or marketing plan and I think you have something that simply shooting in the dark, creative-wise.

    As far as putting it on a level playing field lets apply that to health care – we can offer our best guesses as to what might be wrong with people – they can pick the aliment they like

    I love they use this noble sounding word – “democratize.” What the guy really means is “flood the market with so much crap that clients stop seeing the value of good design”.

    Most of the time (not always), you get what you pay for. Most of the time a $50 logo is worth exactly what you paid for it.
